Seniors shine as football beats New Castle 70-0

New Palestine’s football senior class has created volumes of memories at Kelso Stadium. They made sure their final regular-season game on their home field was extra-memorable. Ten different Dragons scored touchdowns – including eight seniors – in a 70-0 victory over New Castle on NP’s Senior Night. For the third straight week, the Dragons scored in all three phases - the offense produced 522 yards and eight touchdowns in nine possessions. Defensively, Colin Whetsel scooped up a fumble and returned it for a score. And Cameron Rollyson had NP’s first punt return touchdown in a decade. The Dragons’ defense - which has allowed a state-lowest 25 points all season – pitched its fourth shutout of the year, coming against a team that tallied 57 points a week ago. Quarterback Jacob Davis threw for 216 yards - all in the first half - and NP's two quarterbacks spread the ball around to seven different receivers. The Dragons took little time getting started, motoring 80 yards in three plays - with Davis hitting Oglesby for a 43-yard pass on the game’s first play, setting up a 26-yard touchdown pass to Cael Butler. NP was stopped on downs on its next possession, and on the next, faced first-and-34 after holding and hurdling penalties on the same play. They converted - with Butler reeling in a 22-yard catch on third down - and Davis finished the drive with a 1-yard TD. From there, the scoreboard flipped quickly. NP scored four touchdowns in 3:03, turning a 7-0 game into a 35-0 lead. On NC’s next play, Jacobia came in unblocked and sacked the Trojans’ Carson Bell, jarring the ball free. Whetsel scooped it up and ran 31 yards for a score. NP then took advantage of another New Castle fumble, which Ranes capped with a 13-yard run. After a Trojans three-and-out, Davis hit Landon Maddox for a 49-yard touchdown on NP’s next play, The Dragons weren’t finished. Jacobia and Oglesby added rushing touchdowns and Rollyson a 66-yard punt return for a score, capping a 36-point second quarter. It was the Dragons' first punt return for a touchdown since current NP special teams coach Nick Brickens did so in 2015 against Shelbyville. Even when things didn’t go right, they went right. Davis turned a bad snap on a PAT into a scramble for a conversion. In the second half, Bryan Caldwell was able to reel in a screen pass from Ryder Gardner for a score, and then Caldwell moved to quarterback. He handed to fellow senior Rudy Hubbard for a 13-yard touchdown run, which came after a failed New Castle fake punt gave the Dragons good field position. The Dragons are now 8-0 on the season and 6-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. New Castle fell to 2-6 (1-5). The Dragons finish the regular season next week at Delta.
