O'Dell, Rossell win sectional titles

James O'Dell and Jack Rossell both won sectional championships Thursday, leading the New Palestine boys track and field team to a fifth-place finish in the Greenfield-Central sectional. Seeded fifth, O'Dell won the 300 hurdles in 41.59 seconds to win the sectional title. O'Dell's time was fifth-fastest in school history. Rossell cleared 14-3 in the pole vault to win the sectional title, leading a 1-2 finish with Sage Halter, who cleared 14-0. They will compete in next week's Greenfield-Central regional, as well as a number of other Dragons. The top three in each event, as well as other finishers advancing on time, advance to the regional. The Dragons advanced two other individuals to the regional. Cody Crawmer was third in the 800 (1:59.70). Isaiah Thacker placed fifth in the 200 (23.17) and advances on time. All three relays also advance. The 4x800 relay of Gavin Smith, Connor Lapenta, Crawmer and Danny Davis finished second in 8:17.65. The 4x400 relay of Crawmer, Lapenta, David Pack and Dylan Dragoo finished fourth in 3:30.92 and advances on time. The 4x100 relay of Thacker, Pack, Eian Roudebush and O'Dell ran 44.27, the seventh-fastest time in school history. They finished fourth and will advance on time. The Dragons tallied 62 points. They finished behind Warren Central (155.5), Greenfield-Central (107), Franklin Central (103) and Roncalli (72). The Dragons finished ahead of sixth-place Lutheran and Triton Central (31) and four other teams at the 11-team event.
