Softball slams Senior Night victory

The New Palestine softball team slammed three homeruns Thursday en route to a 9-5 Senior Night victory over visiting Connersville. The victory improved the Dragons' record to 20-4, the team's 20th consecutive 20-win season. Alyssa Mumaw, Aglaia Rudd and Allie Blum all homered and the Dragons had eight extra-base hits among their 14 hits for the game. Prior to the game, the Dragons honored seniors Mumaw, Rudd, Kayla Bain and Sydney Hughbanks. The Dragons had to rally, as Connersville homered twice to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Dragons answered in the bottom of the frame when Rudd and Blum led off with singles. Sydney Oliver then doubled in a run with two outs to get the Dragons on the board. In the third, the Dragons tied the game when Blum hit a one-out double. She was along for the ride as Mumaw blasted a homer to left. The Dragons continued to add on, as Paige Ernstes followed with a single. With two outs, Maddie Engle walked. Bain and Hughbanks each followed with RBI singles to give the Dragons a 5-3 edge. The Dragons extended it to 7-3 in the fourth. Rudd led off with a homer. With two outs, two Connersville errors brought home another run. Connersville scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-5, but the Dragons quickly answered in the bottom of the frame. Blum led off with a homer to center. Mumaw then singled, moved to third on Ernstes' double and scored on Oliver's sacrifice fly. Courtney Study went the distance for the victory, allowing six hits, five earned runs and striking out eight. Blum was 3-for-4 with a double and a homer, two runs and an RBI. Rudd was 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Mumaw was 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI. Ernstes was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double. Bain was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Hughbanks was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Oliver was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Reese Rosenbaum was 1-for-1. The Dragons conclude the regular season Friday at Delta with a chance to clinch a piece of the HHC title.
