Softball blasts Zionsville 20-1

The New Palestine softball team used a pair of big innings to beat Zionsville 20-1 Monday at Zionsville. The Dragons scored eight runs in the second inning and then added nine more in the fifth to end the game via the mercy rule. Courtney Study, Sadey Hughbanks and Cailyn Hurst combined on a one-hitter, while the Dragons had 19 hits, including eight extra-base hits. Aglaia Rudd was 4-for-5 with two doubles three RBI. Alyssa Mumaw and Allie Blum both homered and drove in four runs. They hit back-to-back homers in both the second inning. Mumaw was 3-for-4 with three runs and added a double, and Blum 2-for-3 with three runs. Sydney Oliver was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Maddie Engle was 2-for-2 with a run and a double. Sydney Hughbanks was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Kayla Bain was 1-for-1 with two runs and an RBI. Jersi Gross was 1-for-2 with three runs and an RBI. Reese Rosenbaum was 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Nyla Lewis was 1-for-2 with a triple, three runs and two RBI. The Dragons struck quickly for three first-inning runs. Rudd led off with a double, followed by a walk to Blum. Mumaw gave the Dragons a lead with a two-run double and then scored on Oliver's single. In the second, the Dragons fired up the merry-go-round. Lewis led off with a triple and scored on Rudd's double. Blum and Mumaw followed with back-to-back homers to put the Dragons up 7-1. Two walks and a double by Engle loaded the bases. Lewis forced in a run with a walk. Rudd singled home another run with a hit to center. Blum then added a two-run single for her fourth RBI of the inning. After stranding a baserunner in each the third and fourth innings, the Dragons struck again in the fifth. Bain was hit by a pitch and Ella Holman reached on an error to lead off the inning. Gross followed with a bunt single, An errant throw on the play brought home Bain. Sydney Hughbanks followed with an RBI single, Rosenbaum an RBI double. Lewis reached on an error, bringing in another run. Rudd, Mumaw and Bain added RBI hits. An error and a single by Hughbanks added another two runs and gave the Dragons a 20-1 lead. The Dragons are now 19-4 after their eighth straight victory. They next play Thursday at home against Connersville for Senior Night.
