Baseball falls to Whiteland

The New Palestine baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Whiteland Monday at the NPHS diamond. Ben Hirschy had two doubles to lead the Dragons' eight-hit attack in the contest. The Dragons fell behind 2-0 on a pair of unearned runs in the second. They stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the frame. Whiteland extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a triple and a sacrifice fly. The Dragons answered in the bottom of the frame when Jacob Morris singled and scored on Hirschy's second double of the day. Whiteland scored twice in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to four, but the Dragons again answered. Michael Thorpe led off with a single. With two outs, Ben Morwick reached on a dropped third strike to extend the inning. The Dragons capitalized when Wes Stiller drove Thorpe home with an infield hit. A balk brought home another run. Whiteland scored another run in the sixth. The Dragons had a baserunner in the bottom of the frame, but were unable to score. In addition to Hirschy's 2-for-3 day that featured two doubles and an RBI, Stiller was also 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Wyatt Mathies was 2-for-3. Michael Thorpe was 1-for-3 with a run. Morris was 1-for-2 with a run. The Dragons outhit Whiteland 8-7 in the contest. The Dragons are now 13-7 on the season. They next play Tuesday at Pendleton Heights, opening a two-game home-and-home series with the Arabians.
