Tennis wins opener at Franklin

The New Palestine tennis team capped a busy week Saturday by going 1-2 at the Franklin Invitational. The Dragons opened the day with a 3-2 victory over Batesville. Mia Knoop won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Bethany Blachly made her varsity singles debut and won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3. Amelia Schneider/Kenzie Kleiman won a super-tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the match. Olivia Hasenkamp played a strong match but fell 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a super-tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. Emily Appleby/Amelia Rojowski dropped a tight 6-4, 6-3 match at No. 1 doubles. The Dragons then dropped a 5-0 decision to Franklin in the second round. Courtney Johnson's 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 3 singles was the Dragons' best match. In the third round, the Dragons pushed both doubles matches to super-tiebreakers but fell 4-1 to Roncalli. Johnson won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Josephine Harvey/Kaitlyn Mitchell fell 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 and Maddy Potter/Emily Appleby dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 decision at the two doubles spots. The Dragons are now 12-5 on the season. They next play Monday at Mt. Vernon.
