Boys volleyball wins opener at invitational

The New Palestine boys volleyball team won its opener Saturday at the New Palestine Invitational, but then dropped three tight matches. The Dragons opened the day with a 25-19, 25-14 victory over Lawrence Central. Jake Cwikla led the Dragons with 11 kills. Jaxon Hinkle had five digs. Aaron Smith had eight assists and Kameron Engle seven. The Dragons then played back-to-back three-set matches - falling 17-25, 25-16, 15-9 to Martinsville and 25-13, 23-25, 15-13 to Whiteland. Agains Martinsville, Cwikla had six kills and James O'Dell five to lead the Dragons. Martin had eight digs. Smith had 10 assists and five digs. Against Whiteland, Cwikla again had 11 kills. O'Dell, Maguire Gross and Martin had four digs each. Smith had 11 assists. The Dragons finished the day with a 25-17, 25-22 defeat to Monrovia. Cwikla had 11 kills, six digs and three blocks. Martin had 12 digs and Brock Sennott eight. Engle had 14 assists and Smith 11. The Dragons are now 10-15 on the season. They finish the regular season Tuesday at home against Warren Central.
