Softball hits two homers, but falls to Roncalli

The No. 6 New Palestine softball team hit two homers in the middle innings Wednesday, but dropped a 13-4 decision at home to No. 2 Roncalli. Paige Ernstes homered on the first pitch of the fourth inning to get the Dragons on the board. Aglaia Rudd followed in the fifth with a two-run homer on the first pitch she saw of the at-bat, coming shortly after Sydney Oliver drew a leadoff walk on a full-count pitch. The Dragons added another run in the fifth when Allie Blum doubled and scored on Alyssa Mumaw's single. Roncalli jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three times in the second, a run in the third and six more in the fourth. The Royals also scored three runs in the seventh. The Dragons were outhit 13-8. Rudd led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI. Ernstes was also 2-for-4 with a homer. Blum was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Mumaw was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Katie Hirschy was 1-for-3. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Dragons, who are now 11-3 on the season. They continue a three-games-in-three-days stretch Thursday at home against Greenfield-Central.
