The New Palestine football team had a strong start, scoring on its first two possessions, and were dominant on defense Friday in a 35-10 victory over Yorktown in the Dragons' home opener at Kelso Stadium. The Dragons won their 13th consecutive home opener and 16th in the last 17 years to improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. The Dragons again used explosive plays to seize control of the game. On their first drive, they converted third-and-13 with a 20-yard quarterback draw by Jacob Davis. Two plays later, on second-and-25, Davis connected with Cam Rollyson for a 44-yard touchdown on a screen pass to put the Dragons on the board. NP has scored on its first possession in every game this season. After a three-and-out, it didn't take long for the Dragons to connect again. A 24-yard gain by Davis moved the Dragons to midfield, where Davis connected with Landon Maddox on a deep ball for a 49-yard TD, giving the Dragons a 14-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Red Rage was dominant, sacking Yorktown quarterback Sam Tokar four times in the first half. The Tigers did not get a first down until three minutes remained in the first half - on their sixth possession - and never crossed midfield in the opening half. The Dragons kept knocking on the door, but a penalty on the 1-yard line stalled one drive, which ended in a turnover on downs. A fumble on the 10 and a missed field goal on the next two possessions kept the score 14-0 until the late stages of the second quarter, but the Red Rage kept getting the ball back for the offense. NP finally broke through after a short 34-yard drive, which was keyed by a 21-yard pass from Davis to Maddox and a contested 17-yard catch by Cael Butler, which moved the ball to the 1. Davis ran it in on the next play. Davis then executed an outstanding two-minute drill - a 10-play, 62-yard, 93-second drive that ended with Davis' 2-yard run with seven seconds left in the half. The key play was a 27-yard pass to Mason Oglesby on fourth-and-14 to move the ball to the 10. With a 28-0 halftime lead, it took little time for the Dragons to trigger the running clock. After forcing a sixth three-and-out on Yorktown's opening possession, the Dragons motored 40 yards on five plays, capped by Caden Jacobia's 12-yard run. Davis was 3-for-3 on the drive, including a 15-yard pass to Maddox. After the running clock, Yorktown went on two long drives - with an on-side kick in-between - to score 10 points. Jacobia's TD run with 8:31 to go in the third was the Dragons' final offensive play of the game. NP outgained Yorktown 423-105, with Davis throwing for 233 yards and two scores - 114 to Maddox. The Dragons had 190 rushing yards, with Davis and Jacobia each rushing for 84 yards. Five different receivers caught a pass in the contest. Yorktown had 35 total yards in the first half, and was held to 14 rushing yards for the game. Maddox's 114-yard receiving game was the Dragons' first since Austin McMahan had 106 against Kokomo in the 2024 season opener.
