A week ago, the New Palestine football team needed just 27 seconds and two plays to find the end zone. Friday night at Decatur Central, they didn’t even wait that long. Caden Jacobia took the opening kickoff, burst through a seam and outran the Hawks’ defense for a 95-yard touchdown. The Class 5A No. 1 Dragons then finished the first-half with another special teams touchdown, sending them on their way to a 28-6 victory over the Hawks. Special teams carried the Dragons in a game where they didn’t touch the ball much - NP ran just 13 first-half plays to DC’s 39, and had just 6:48 of first-half possession time. Yet, the Dragons led 21-6 at the break. With NP leading 14-6, Cameron Rollyson dove to down a Jacob Davis punt at the Hawks’ 1-foot line. It wouldn’t be the biggest play Rollyson would make on the possession. DC, aided by a pass interference call on third-and-16, drove to the Dragons’ 9. NP forced a field goal attempt on the final play of the half. Rollyson came around edge, blocked the kick, scooped it up and ran it 80 yards for a touchdown. After Jacobia’s opening-kickoff TD, the Hawks answered with a 10-play march that ended with Morris’ touchdown run. A missed PAT kept NP ahead. DC drove to the Dragons’ 34 on its next possession, but Connor Jacobia picked off a fourth-down pass on the first quarter’s final snap to end the threat. On the next play, Davis found Oglesby wide open over the middle for a 67-yard TD. However, that was the only offense the Dragons would have until the fourth quarter. Their next drive stalled at midfield, and their first two possessions of the second half were three-and-outs NP had 95 yards of offense at halftime - with 67 coming on one play - and finished with 163 yards. Davis ran for 43 yards and threw for 75. Josh Ranes and Caden Jacobia each ran for 23 in the contest. Davis did hit a milestone on the TD pass to Oglesby, crossing the 3,000 yard passing mark for his career. Defensively, the Dragons were able to hold DC out of the end zone after the first drive despite being on the field most of the first half. In the second half, the Dragons began to dominate - forcing negative plays on the first plays of each of the Hawks’ first two drives - one ending on downs, one with a Garrett Ranes interception. The next finished with a punt - which Rollyson ran back 27 yards to the DC 35, setting up the final score, a 13-yard TD by Josh Ranes early in the fourth quarter.
