Bauer wins title at John Cleland Invitational

New Palestine sophomore Mike Bauer won the title in the freshman/sophomore race at Saturday's season-opening John Cleland Invitational at Northview Christian Church in Carmel. Bauer ran a 4K race in 13:01.3, winning by three seconds over Carmel freshman Carter Kellett. In the girls freshman/sophomore race, sophomore Hailey Pardieck finished fourth in 15:22.1. The Dragons had another top-25 finish as Elena Daugherty was 21st in 16:27.9 in the 228-runner race. Led by Bauer, the Dragons boys were seventh of 20 teams in the freshman/sophomore race with 229 places. In addition to Bauer, Carson Cooper was 27th (13:51.3), Gabe Silvey 71st (14:47.3), Micah Jones 101st (15:16.4) and Zaven Rodriguez 111th (15:22.4). Carmel won with 38 places. The Dragons girls were sixth in the freshman/sophomore race among 14 teams, with a score of 175. In addition to Pardieck and Daugherty's finishes, Bre Journay was 48th (17:32.6), Brynn Richey 51st (17:34.6) and Kylie Knoop 82nd (18:39.4). Homestead won with a score of 58. The Dragons boys were 15th of 19 teams in the junior/senior race with 443 places. Homestead was the winner with 69. Hayden Flanagan led the Dragons by finishing 113th (14:57.6), followed by Ryan Cain (122nd, 15:02.4), Cody Lowe (150th, 15:30.3), Harrison Carr (155th, 15:34.6) and J.T. Koch (173rd, 15:49.5). The Dragons girls were ninth of 15 teams in the junior/senior race with 259 places. Carmel won with 49. Abby Journay led the way with a 26th-place finish (16:15.9), followed by Heidi Bloomer (59th, 17:35.0), Olivia Weaver (60th, 17:37.6), McKenzie Hacker (89th, 18:34.9) and Addison Uhl (94th, 18:44.8). In combined scoring, the Dragons boys were 15th of 23 schools with 383 places. Bauer was 15th, Cooper 74th, Silvey 170th, Flanagan 199th and Cain 208th out of 666 runners. Homestead (62) defeated Carmel (94) for the overall boys title. The Dragons girls were eighth of 21 schools with 236 places. Pardieck was 10th, Abby Journay 41st, Daugherty 54th, Bre Journay 106th and Richey 109th in a field of 415 runners. Homested (53) defeated Carmel (59) for the overall title.
