Baseball finds trios to beat Southport

The New Palestine baseball team found the trio to its liking Thursday night in a 12-2 six-inning victory over Southport. The Dragons scored three runs in each the first and second innings, and added another trio of runs in the fourth. In addition. starting pitcher Brayden Marrow pitched out of two bases-loaded jams in the first four innings, leaving a trio of Cardinals on base. Marrow allowed five hits and one run in four innings, striking out four, to earn the win. Adam Rickey finished off the game, allowing two hits and a run in two innings of relief. He also had two strikeouts. The Dragons outhit the Cardinals 10-7. Ben Morwick was 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI. Wes Stiller was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Blaine Nunnally was 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs. Ben Hirschy was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBI. Rickey was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Nick Deering and Michael Thorpe each had a hit and a run, while Jacob Morris was 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI. Trailing 1-0 in the first, Stiller and Hirschy hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Hirschy later scored on a wild pitch to put the Dragons up 3-1. The Dragons added three more in the second. Michael Thorpe singled, Nunnally walked. Morwick followed with a two-run single and scored on Stiller's single to right, pushing the lead to 6-1. In the fourth, the Dragons added three more as Nunnally singled, Morwick walked and Stiller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hirschy pushed home a run with a groundout. Rickey then drove home two more with a single to center. Morwick's RBI single plated another run in the fifth, while Morris' two-run double in the sixth invoked the mercy rule. The Dragons are now 6-5 on the season. They next play Saturday morning at Franklin Central.
