Softball drops slugfest at HSE

The New Palestine softball team dropped an 11-7 contest Thursday at Hamilton Southeastern. The loss drops the Dragons record to 4-2. The Dragons fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but plated two runs in the second when Aglaia Rudd hit a bases-loaded two-run single. HSE extended the lead to 4-2 with a third-inning homer, but the Dragons responded with five runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Sydney Oliver hit a one-out solo homer. Allie Blum followed by drawing a walk, stealing second and scoring on Rudd's single to tie the game. Alyssa Mumaw reached on an error and Paige Ernstes hit a three-run homer to put the Dragons up 7-4. However, HSE responded with five runs of its own in the bottom of the inning on seven hits to re-take the lead at 9-7, Down two, the Dragons put the first two runners on in the sixth, but were unable to score. HSE scored twice in the sixth to extend its lead. Rudd led the Dragons' nine-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Blum was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Jersi Gross had a hit. Mumaw was 1-for-3 with a run. Ernstes and Oliver both homered. The Dragons are next in action Friday at home against Carmel. The Dragons won the JV game 16-2 in five innings, with Lucy Dunn and Kylee Beranek both hitting homers.
