Softball rallies, but falls in seventh

The New Palestine softball team rallied from a four-run deficit to tie the game Wednesday, but a two-out walk-off hit delivered Franklin Central to a 7-6 victory over the Dragons. The Dragons moved to 4-1 on the season after their first defeat. The Flashes took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Allie Blum's two-run homer drew the Dragons within one in the fifth, but FC responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to go up 6-2. The Dragons rallied to tie the game in the sixth. Katie Hirschy led off with a homer to left. Paige Ernstes followed by reaching on an error, Maddie Engle singled and Reese Rosenbaum singled to drive in a run. Engle also scored on an error on the play, moving Ronenbaum into scoring position. A bunt moved Rosenbaum to third, and she scored to tie the game by beating the throw home on Kayla Bain's grounder to third. Dragons pitcher Courtney Study pitched around a hit in the sixth. In the seventh, Ernstes hit a two-out single but was left on base. In the seventh, Study retired the first two Flashes, but a walk on a 3-2 pitch extended the inning and FC followed with a double to right to plate the winning run. Ernstes led the Dragons' seven-hit attack, going 2-for-4. Blum was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Aglaia Rudd was 1-for-4. Hirschy was 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Engle was 1-for-4 with a run. Rosenbaum was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. The Dragons are next in action Thursday at Hamilton Southeastern, before returning home Friday to face Carmel.
