Girls track has five sectional champions, advances nine

The New Palestine girls track and field team had five sectional champion Tuesday in the Greenfield-Central sectional. Rylee Hurst was the sectional champion in two events, winning the 400 (59.86) and long jump (17-0.25). Abby Journay was the sectional champion in the 200, running a time of 25.80 seconds and winning by an eyelash. Hailey Pardieck won the title in the 3200 (11:12.01), winning by more than 14 seconds. Savannah Baird won the title in the pole vault (9-0). The Dragons had a number of other regional qualifiers. Lillie Abernathy was second in the shot put (34-5.75). Journay was also third in the high jump (5-0) to earn a spot in next week's regional. The Dragons' 4x800 relay of Olivia Weaver, McKenzie Hacker, Margaret Barrett and Bri Journay finished second in 10:10.39 and will advance to next week's regional. The 4x400 relay of Cayanna Brown, Hurst, Bri Journay and Abby Journay finished third in 4:15.21 and will advance to the regional. Caylee Brown was fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.32). Cadyn Brown was fourth in discus (97-10). While the top three advance to regional, they will await a potential callback based on the top times and distances from all of the sectionals feeding next week's regional. As a team, the Dragons finished third. They scored 110 points, finishing behind Franklin Central (176) and Warren Central (116). NP finished ahead of Roncalli (91.5), Greenfield-Central (68.5), Beech Grove (21) and Lutheran (19). The regional will be May 27 at Lawrence Central.
