The New Palestine softball team seized the lead in the opening frame and kept adding on Friday in a 10-0 five-inning victory at Plainfield. The Dragons improved to 3-0 with the victory. The victory began before the Dragons made the first out of the game. After leadoff batter Allie Blum reached on an error, Aglaia Rudd and Alyssa Mumaw followed with back-to-back RBI doubles, giving NP a 2-0 lead. The Dragons left two runners on in the second and added a run on the third on Maddie Engle's one-out RBI single. NP broke the game open with a five-run fourth. Blum drew a one-out walk and Rudd followed with a base hit. Mumaw drove Blum home with her second RBI double of the game. A wild pitch brought home another run to put the Dragons up 5-0. Paige Ernstes then hit a two-run double and scored on Engle's groundout to cap the five-run inning. Rudd and Mumaw both had RBI singles in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-0 and invoke the mercy rule. Courtney Study and Kenna Tweedy combined on the shutout. Study got the win, allowing three hits and fanning three in 3 2/3 innings. Tweedy allowed two hits and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings. Rudd and Mumaw led the Dragons' 10-hit attack. Mumaw was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three RBI. Rudd was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Ernstes and Engle each had a hit and two RBI. Blum and Jersi Gross also had singles for the Dragons. The Dragons are next in action Tuesday at East Central.
