Tennis falls to three ranked teams at Westfield

The New Palestine girls tennis team played three of the state's top teams Saturday and went 0-3 at the Westfield Shamrock Invitational. In the opening match, the Dragons dropped a tight 3-2 decision to No. 25 West Lafayette. The Dragons swept the doubles, as Maizy Haynes/Riley Watts won 6-2, 6-1 and Alyssa Appleby/Elliott Graham won 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in a super-tiebreaker. The Dragons dropped all three singles matches. Arabella Deisher fell in a tight 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 super-tiebreaker at No. 1. Bethany Blachly fell 6-2, 6-1 and Kaitlyn Mitchell 6-3, 6-1 at the other two spots. In the second match, the Dragons fell 3-2 to No. 28 Lake Central. Blachly won 6-2, 7-6(4) and Mitchell won a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Deisher fell 6-0, 6-0, while Haynes/Watts dropped a 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 decision and Appleby/Graham fell 6-4, 6-1. In the day's final match, the Dragons fell 5-0 to No. 4 Westfield. Deisher fell 6-0, 6-0, Mitchell moved to No. 2 singles and dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision, while Haynes lost 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 at No. 3. Blachly/Watts lost a 6-3, 6-1 decision, while Appleby/Graham lost 6-0, 6-2. The Dragons finish the regular season 11-7. They will compete in next week's sectional at Mt. Vernon.
