Softball falls at Fishers

The Class 3A No. 1 New Palestine softball team fell behind early and dropped a 10-4 decision Wednesday at Fishers. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Dragons, who are now 19-2 on the year. The Dragons fell behind 2-0 in the first inning on a pair of unearned runs, but quickly tied the game. Maddie Engle hit a double and scored on Kenna Tweedy's single in the second. In the third, Callie Cromwell reached on an error and scored on Payton Dye's single up the middle. However, Fishers scored four in the bottom of the third - including a three-run homer - to take a 6-2 lead. The Dragons drew a run back in the fourth, as Tweedy reached on an error and scored on Cromwell's groundout. Fishers added two runs in each the fifth and sixth to go up 10-3. In the seventh, Engle hit a single to plate Dye, who walked earlier in the inning. The Dragons were outhit 12-7. Engle was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Katie Hirschy was 2-for-4. Tweedy and Dye were each 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Kylee Beranek was 1-for-3. Sadey Hughbanks struck out five in six innings in the circle. The Dragons are next in action Thursday at Pendleton Heights.
