Girls track dominates en route to county title

The New Palestine girls track and field team dominated the field Wednesday en route to the county championship. The Dragons scored 96 points to beat out Mt. Vernon (64), Greenfield-Central (59) and Eastern Hancock (25). The Dragons boys finished third with 54 points, finishing behind MV (112) and G-C (58) and ahead of EH (20). The Dragons dominated the field events. In pole vault, Savannah Baird and Lilly Madden split the title, clearing 8-0. The Dragons swept the podium, as Kylie Knoop also cleared 8-0 and finished third because she had one more miss. The Dragons also had a 1-2-3 finish in the shot put, where Lillie Abernathy (34-9) finished ahead of teammates Cadyn Brown and Madyson Liem. The Dragons had two other double-winners. Hailey Pardieck won the 1600 (5:10.47) and 3200 (11:30.67). Abby Journay won the 200 (25.11) and high jump (5-4), setting a school record in the 200. She also teamed with Taylor Burke, Margaret Barrett and Cayanna Brown to win the 4x400 relay (4:14.40). Also winning was Rylee Hurst in the long jump (16-6.25). Finishing second were Journay in the 100, Rylee Hurst in the 400, Olivia Weaver in the 800 and Cadyn Brown in discus and shot put. Winners for the Dragons boys were Paxton Holmes in the 110 hurdles (15.14) and 300 hurdles (40.03) and Colton Spears in the high jump (6-2). Finishing second were Eli Wasson in the 100 and Jake Cooper in the 800. Wasson finished third in the 200, but set a school record with a time of 22.06. The Dragons' 4x100 relay of Holmes. Wasson, Will Bardonner and Spears also finished second, setting a school record in 42.73. The Dragons head back to Mt. Vernon next week for the Hoosier Heritage Conference meets, with the girls running Tuesday and the boys Thursday.
