The New Palestine softball team sent the first 10 batters to the plate - all of whom scored - Thursday en route to a dominant 14-0 victory over Mt. Vernon. Sadey Hughbanks and Tessa Mohr combined on a one-hit shutout. They came within an eyelash of a perfect game - MV's lone hit came on an infield single to deep shortstop, which the batter beat out by an eyelash. Mohr struck out four batters in three innings. At the plate, the Dragons jumped out in front early. Jersi Gross led off the game with a single, and the merry-go-round was going. After Payton Dye was hit by a pitch, Katie Hirschy roped an 0-2 pitch off the rightfield fence for a two-run triple. Maddie Engle followed by looping a ball into rightfield, which was misplayed for a two-base error, scoring another run. After a walk to Saydie Miller and a base hit by Kenna Tweedy loaded the bases, Kylee Beranek drove in a run with a single. Catherine Trebley drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0. Callie Cromwell followed with a two-run single, turning the order back over to Gross, who drove in another run with an infield hit. A throwing error brought home another run, and Hirschy's sacrifice fly plated Gross with the 10th run of the inning. The Dragons added two more runs when Beranek hit a one-out double and Trebley was hit by a pitch. Both scored on the next play, as Cromwell singled to center to plate Beranek and a throwing error brought home the second run. In the third, Hirschy roped a single to center. Engle followed by blasting a pitch over the leftfield fence for a two-run homer. Six players had two hits each for the Dragons, who had 12 hits for the game. Hirschy was 2-for-2 with two runs, a triple and three RBI. Engle was 2-for-3 with two runs and a two-run homer. Gross was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Beranek was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Cromwell was 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI. Tweedy was 2-for-2 with a run.
