The top-ranked New Palestine softball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, falling 2-0 to No. 7 Yorktown. The Dragons saw an eight-game winning streak snapped and are now 8-1 on the season. Yorktown scored its lone runs in the fifth, doing its damage with two outs. Back-to-back singles put two runners on, and a two-out double plated them both. All four of Yorktown's hits came in the fifth inning, by consecutive batters. Yorktown only had one other baserunner the entire game - the leadoff batter in the first inning reached on an error. After that, pitcher Sadey Hughbanks set down 14 consecutive Tigers before the four-hit fifth. The Dragons struggled to generate offense. Their best threat came in the third, when Saydie Miller led off with a walk and Catherine Trebley was hit by a pitch. But back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout ended the threat. In the sixth, Maddie Engle hit a two-out triple, but was stranded after a grounder to the pitcher. It was the Dragons' lone hit. Kenna Tweedy reached on an error in the seventh, but was also stranded. Hughbanks allowed four hits and struck out six in a complete-game effort. The Dragons are next in action Wednesday at Zionsville.
