Softball powers past Plainfield

Katie Hirschy had three hits and drove in five runs, leading the New Palestine softball team to a 10-2 victory over host Plainfield The Class 3A No. 2 Dragons improved to 4-0 on the season, having scored 10 runs or more in each of their victories. They've outscored their opponents 41-3 on the young season. Hirschy and Saydie Miller both homered for the Dragons, who drilled 12 hits on the day. Nine of the Dragons' hits went for extra bases. Hirschy was 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two runs and five RBI. Maddie Engle also had three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double, scoring three times and driving in a run. Miller was also 2-for-4 with two RBI. Payton Dye was 1-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Callie Cromwell was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Kenna Tweedy was 1-for-3 with a double, while Catherine Trebley was 1-for-4 with a double. Sadey Hughbanks had a solid game in the circle, allowing two runs and eight hits over seven innings. She struck out 11 batters. Hirschy got the game started with a three-run homer in the first. Jersi Gross led off the inning with a walk and Engle followed with a single. Plainfield drew a run back in the bottom of the frame. The Dragons left two runners on in the second, but added a run in the third when Miller hit a solo homer. Plainfield scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the third to close to within 4-2. However, the Dragons extended the lead in the fifth. Engle, Hirschy and Miller all doubled to plate two runs. NP exploded for four runs in the sixth. Trebley and Cromwell hit back-to-back doubles to plate a run. Engle followed with an RBI single, Dye an RBI triple and Hirschy an RBI hit. The Dragons are next in action Wednesday at Franklin Central.
