Girls track wins outdoor opener; boys second

The New Palestine girls track and field team won its outdoor season opener Thursday, while the boys finished second in a three-way meet at Greenfield-Central. The Dragons girls scored 89.5 points to win, with G-C second (67) and Shelbyville third (17.5). The Dragons boys finished second to G-C, scoring 61 points to the Cougars' 78. Shelbyville tallied 28. Winners for the Dragons' girls were the 4x800 relay of Margaret Barrett, Olivia Weaver, Bre Journay and Hailey Pardieck (10:24.9), the 4x400 relay (4:24.47), Caylee Brown in the 100 hurdles , Rylee Hurst in the long jump (14-11.75), 100 (12.96) and 400 (1:01.93), Evelyn Kell in the 1600 (6:05.58), Barrett in the 800 (2:41.12), Abby Journay in the 200 (27.53) and high jump (4-10), Pardieck in the 3200 (11:17.98), Savannah Baird in pole vault (9-0) and Cadyn Brown in shot put (30-5). Pardieck's 3200 time of 10:24.9 is third in school history. Individuals finishing second were McKenzie Hacker in the 1600, Olivia Weaver in the 800, Lilly Madden in the pole vault and Cadyn Brown in discus. Winners for the Dragons boys were Paxton Holmes in the 110 hurdles (15.91) and 300 hurdles (43.06), the 4x100 relay of Holmes, Eli Wasson, Will Bardonner and Colton Spears (43.97) and Quinn Crawmer in pole vault (12-6). The relay time is fifth-fastest overall. Holmes' 110 hurdles time is ninth-fastest. Individuals finishing second were Wasson in the 100 and 200, Mike Bauer in the 800 and 1600, Bardonner in the 300 hurdles, Spears in high jump and Rudy Hubbard in long jump. The Dragons are back in action Saturday at the Chatard Invitational.
