New Palestine wrestlers Bryce Doss and Gunner Butt both won their opening-round matches Friday at the IHSAA State Finals. Both will advance to Saturday's placement rounds, which begin at 9 a.m. at Gainbridge Fieldhouse with the quarterfinals, which will be followed by the semifinals and consolation semifinals. The third, fifth and seventh-place matches will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the championship matches at 7:30 p.m. Butt (27-8) won a tight 5-4 decision over Mishawka's Xavier Chavez at 106. He gave up the first takedown, then evened the match with a first-period reversal. He began the second period with an escape, but then was taken down and again executed a reversal to go up 5-4, before riding out Chavez in the third period to clinch the victory. Butt will wrestle Delta's Ayden Bollinger (40-0) in the quarterfinal. Doss (27-2), a semistate champion, dominated his first-round match against Cascade's Logan Bickel. He got the first takedown in the opening period. In the second, he started on top and executed two near-falls to go up 8-0 before allowing an escape. A reversal gave him a 10-1 lead in the third before he pinned Bickel at 5:51. Doss will wrestle Delta's Neal Mosier (38-1) in the quarterfinal.
