Softball dominates in Opening Day victory

The New Palestine softball team was dominant Wednesday in a 10-0 six-inning victory over Eastern Hancock to open the season. The Dragons jumped ahead 5-0 after an inning and a half. Sadey Hughbanks and Tessa Mohr combined on a one-hit shutout. Hughbanks allowed one hit and struck out nine over five innings. Mohr pitched a perfect sixth. Eight different Dragons had a hit, as NP outhit the hosts 14-1. Payton Dye was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Katie Hirschy doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a run. Maddie Engle was also 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jersi Gross was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Saydie Miller was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Kenna Tweedy was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Catherine Trebley and Hughbanks also each had hits. The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Gross led off witih a single and scored on Dye's double. Miller then plated another run with a single. In the second, Gross reached on a two-out error, stole second and scored on Engle's base hit. Hirschy and Dye followed with RBI hits. The Dragons wouldn't strike again until the fifth, when Dye reached on an error. Miller followed with an RBI double, while Tweedy and Trebley added RBI singles to make it 8-0. NP added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Dye and another run coming home on a fielder's choice. The Dragons are now 1-0 on the season. They contest their home opener Thursday against Triton Central.
