Doss, Butt punch tickets to wrestling State Finals

Bryce Doss and Gunner Butt both punched their tickets to the IHSAA wrestling State Finals Saturday, as Doss won the New Castle semistate title at 120 pounds and Butt was the runner-up at 106. The top four in each weight class advanced from the semistate to the State Finals, which will be held next weekend at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The first round will be Friday, Feb. 17, with the final three rounds the following day. The Dragons placed 10th in the team score out of 62 teams that participated in the semistate, tallying 44 points. Cathedral (117) was the champion. Doss will take a 27-2 record into the State Finals. He won his first match 9-2 over Alexadria's Ezra Fye, then earned a State Finals spot with a 3:04 pin of Hamilton Southeastern's Nick Anderson in the ticket round. He then beat Cathedral's Gavin Bragg 5-3 in overtime in the semifinal and clinched the semistate championship with a 7-5 victory over Mt. Vernon's Elijah Brody. At 106, Butt won his first-round match with a 2:45 pin of South Dearborn's Liam Hubbartt, then earned his State Finals spot with a 4-0 victory over Zionsville's Sully Frazier. In the semifinal, he defeated Mt. Vernon's Connor Bayliss 7-0, then dropped a 6-2 decision to Perry Meridian's Hurai Lian in the final in a rematch of a regional contest. Butt will take a 26-8 record to Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Three other Dragons competed at the semistate. Shaun Glass (195) got to the ticket round, pinning Carmel's Seth Richardson in 2:44, but then lost by fall to Connersville's Orlan Foster in 1:37. At 113, Cole Vandygriff lost a 4-1 decision to Westfield's Porter Temples in the first round. At 126, Tyler Lavin lost a 6-1 decision to Chatard's Jack Davis in the first round.
