Girls swimming places second in sectional

The New Palestine girls swimming and diving team had a tremendous showing at Saturday's New Palestine sectional, tallying 292 points to finish second in the 11-team field. The second-place finish is the Dragons' best ever in a sectional. Greenfield-Central won the title with 506 points. The Dragons finished ahead of New Castle (278), Mt. Vernon (269), Connersville (231) and the rest of the field. The Dragons started the day with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay, with Katelyn Trimpe, Lillie Abernathy, Rachel Hamilton and Kyleigh Turner swimming 2:01.48. The two other relays finished top-three. Sullie Leavell, Turner, Chloe Siler and Adrianna Huston were runners-up in the 200 free relay (1:43.73). Leavell, Katelyn Trimpe, Siler and Huston finished third in the 400 free relay (3:15.19). The Dragons' top individual was Ava Tuley, who finished second in diving (296.30) and will advance to next week's diving regional. Lauren Appleby was eighth and Kayla Bain 13th. The Dragons had three finalists in the 50 freestyle: Siler was fourth (25.71), with Leavell sixth and Turner eighth. In the 100 freestyle, Huston was fourth (56.61), with Cadyn Brown 11th. The Dragons also had two finalists in the 100 butterfly, with Leavell finishing fifth (1:05.27) and Siler seventh. In the 200 freestyle, Huston finished sixth (2:06.06), Trimpe ninth and Olivia Melangton 15th. Abernathy was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.04), with Isabelle Singer 13th and Madalyn Bard 16th. Abernathy was ninth in the 200 IM, with Hamilton 11th and Emma Snyder 13th. In the 500 free, Trimpe finished ninth and Melangton 13th. In the 100 backstroke, Hamilton was 14th and Snyder 15th.
