Doss wins regional title; 5 wrestlers advance

Bryce Doss won a regional championship at 120 pounds and four other New Palestine wrestlers advanced from Saturday's Perry Meridian regional, with three - Gunner Butt, Cole Vandygriff and Shaun Glass - finishing as regional runners-up. Tyler Lavin finished third. The quintet will represent the Dragons at next week's New Castle semistate. The Dragons scored 84.5 team points, finishing fifth out of 16 participating teams. Warren Central won with 166 points. Doss won the title at 120 to improve to 23-2 on the season. He pinned Beech Grove's Parker Pettigrew in 46 seconds in the first round, then won a 9-0 major decision over Greenfield-Central's Cade Zuber in the semifinal and a 19-3 tech fall over Warren Central's Terry Easley in the final. At 106, Gunner Butt finished as the runner-up. He won a forfeit to earn his semistate trip in the first round. He then won a 1-0 decision over Roncalli's Peyton Schoettle in the semifinal and lost 7-3 to Perry Meridian's Hurai Lian in the final. Butt heads to the semistate with a 23-7 mark. At 113, Cole Vandygriff (26-5) won a medical forfeit to punch his ticket to the semistate. He then won a 12-2 major decision over Roncalli's Blake Getz in the semifinal before dropping a 5-1 decision to Perry Meridian's R.J. Taylor in the final. At 195, Shaun Glass (26-4) pinned Southport's Uriah Stearman in the opening round to punch his semistate ticket. He then beat Perry Meridian's Andy Warren 3-1 in the semifinal and lost an 8-1 decision to Roncalli's Luke Hansen in the final. At 126, Tyler Lavin (16-7) finished third. He pinned Perry Meridian's Gino Stewart in 1:19 in the opening round, then lost a 10-2 major decision to Roncalli's Alex Plahitko in the semifinal before pinning Warren Central's Adrian Cohen in 2:59 in the third-place match. Jaedyn Jeffries (152) and Gavin Wilcher (170) also wrestled, but both lost by fall in the first round.
