Bryce Doss' third-place finish - a career-best for him - led the New Palestine delegation at Saturday's IHSAA boys wrestling State Finals. Doss finished third at 144, while Gunner Butt was fifth at 138 and William Glesing eighth at 285. After winning by fall on Friday, Doss pinned Columbus North's Cohen Long in 4:21 in the quarterfinals. He led Center Grove's Peyton Hornsby 3-2 until a penalty point with two seconds left tied the match. Hornsby then recorded a fall in the extra session. Doss rallied to beat Valparaiso's Luke Reid 15-8 in the third-place match, with four takedowns and a near-fall. Doss finishes his senior season with a 36-2 record and three consecutive State Finals trips - placing each time. At 138, Butt won an 11-4 decision in Friday's first round. On Saturday, he had a difficult draw with Evansville Mater Dei's Isaiah Schaefer - ranked No. 2 in the state - and lost 12-3. Butt then secured a reversal at the buzzer to win his wrestleback match against Columbus North's Justice Thornton 5-4. In the fifth-place match, he won 6-3 in overtime over Chatard's Jack Davis. Butt finishes his junior year 38-3. He is a three-time state qualifier and two-time state placer. Glesing made his first appearance in the State Finals at 285. Friday went well - he recorded a 33-second pin. On Saturday, he lost a 7-2 decision to Brownsburg's Maximus Forrester, was pinned by Leo's Isaiah Coolman in 1:17, and then lost a 4-1 decision to Homestead's Caleb Evans in his three matches. Glesing finishes his sophomore season 22-8. As a team, the Dragons finished 12th in the state with 30 points. Brownsburg (238) won, with Center Grove (115) and Crown Point (95.5) rounding out the top three.
