The New Palestine wrestling team sent three athletes to the IHSAA State Finals, and all three won their opening-round matches Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Gunner Butt, Bryce Doss and William Glesing all advance to the state quarterfinals, where they are guaranteed to place in the top eight. At 138, Butt used two takedowns and a third-period near-fall to pull away to an 11-4 decision over Portage's Cooper Wilkins. Butt improved to 36-2 with the victory. He will wrestle Evansville Mater Dei's Isaiah Schaefer (40-3) in the quarterfinals. Butt will place at state for the third consecutive year. At 144, Doss improved to 34-1 on the season with a 3:18 fall over North White's Lincoln Frazee. Doss wrestled aggressively and had a takedown at the end of the first period, then a second takedown in the second, which he quickly built to a pin. Making his third State Finals appearance, Doss has clinched a top-eight finish for the second time in his career. He will wrestle Columbus North's Cohen Long (30-7) in Saturday's quarterfinal round. At 285, Glesing needed just 33 seconds to pin New Haven's Charles McGrant. It was the fastest of four falls in the 285-pound bracket. Making his first State Finals appearance, Glesing has clinched a state medal. He will wrestle Brownsburg's Maximus Forrester (35-3) in the quarterfinal round. The 33-second fall was the third-fastest of the day. The quarterfinal round will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the semifinals to follow. The third, fifth and seventh-place matches will be wrestled at 4:30 p.m., with the state championship matches beginning at 7:30 p.m.
