Boys basketball streak snapped at 15

The New Palestine boys basketball team's winning streak was snapped at 15 games Monday with a 59-58 loss to Lawrence North in a tightly-contested game. The Dragons are now 15-1 on the season. The 15-game winning streak was a school record. The Dragons led for the first two and a half quarters before a late run in the third gave LN a 45-41 lead going into the final frame. The Dragons held the Wildcats scoreless for the first four and a half minutes of the quarter, tying the game on a from Ben Slagley and two free throws from Moses Haynes. LN then responded on a 3-pointer by Myles Baker and a runner by Kobi Bowles to go up 50-45. The Dragons answered quickly. Ben Slagley got the ball inside, hit a shot and completed a three-point play on back-to-back possessions, putting the Dragons up 51-50. LN again responded with a runner by Bowles and a 3-pointer from Miles Good to go up 55-51. Blaine Nunnally hit a free throw to draw the Dragons within three and a backcourt steal led to a basket by Ian Stephens to draw NP within one. Baker answered on the other end for LN and Blaine Nunnally responded with a drive and two free throws, again cutting the deficit to one at 57-56 in the final minute. The Dragons twice fouled LN and twice, the Wildcats missed front ends of one-and-ones. The Dragons got the ball inside on each of the ensuing possessions, but were unable to finish through contact. Baker hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to make it a 3-point game. The Dragons had a late 3-point attempt fall short, which Julius Gizzi followed with a putback at the buzzer. The Dragons were flying early, building a 16-7 lead by pushing the ball on the break. Stephens scored six first-quarter points, Eian Roudebush hit two early shots and Moses Haynes drained a triple. A late 3-pointer drew the Wildcats within six at the break, but Blaine Nunnally scored the first four points of the second to put the Dragons up 20-10. LN kept responding and the lead volleyed between three and eight points much of the remainder of the half. Haynes and Stephens each hit triples to help the Dragons hold a 31-25 halftime lead. LN outscored the Dragons 20-10 in the third quarter to take the lead. Blaine Nunnally scored four points in the frame for the Dragons. Stephens led four Dragons in double figures with 14 points. Blaine Nunnally scored 12. Slagley tallied 10 - eight in the fourth quarter. Haynes also had 10, a career high. Roudebush scored six, Gizzi four and Bryant Nunnally two. Bowles led LN with 15 points, while Baker scored 12 of his 14 in the second half. The Dragons dropped the JV game 60-42. The Dragons next play Thursday at Perry Meridian.
