Boys wrestling sends five to semistate

The New Palestine boys wrestling team advanced five individuals to next week's New Castle semistate, including three regional champions from the Perry Meridian regional. Gunner Butt, Bryce Doss and William Glesing all won regional titles, while Colin Whetsel and Gabe Flick also earned semistate berths. At 138, Butt (31-2) advanced to the final with a pin and a tech fall, and then beat Warren Central's Terry Easley 4-1 in overtime in a rematch of last week's sectional final. At 144, Doss improved to 29-1 with a first-period pin in the ticket round. He won a tight 7-6 decision over Roncalli's Alex Plahitko in the semis, then beat Franklin Central's Moses Stevenson 8-6 in the championship match. Glesing (18-4) won the title at 285, with two second-period falls to advance to the final. There, he beat Warren Central's Jacari Markey 9-3. At 215, Whetsel (24-3) advanced to the final and finished second. He had a fall in the ticket round, then won 1-0 over Purdue Poly's Antonio Cisneros-Rodriguez in the semifinals. In the championship match, he lost a 4-2 decision to Perry Meridian's Andy Warren. Flick (165) finished third at 165. He punched his semistate ticket with a 52-second fall. He lost by fall in the semifinal, but then won 10-4 over Lawrence North's Jericho Jackson in the third-place match. Also wrestling Saturday were Blake Doss (113), Wes Harbert (120), Braeden Lintner (132), Isaiah Jones (175) and Eli Oberle (190), but they were unable to advance. As a team, the Dragons finished third of 16 teams with 90.5 points, behind Roncalli (141.5) and Warren Central (126.5). The Dragons' quintet will compete in next Saturday's semistate at the New Castle Fieldhouse.
