Whetsel, Butt win titles, 10 wrestlers advance to regional

Colin Whetsel and Gunner Butt won sectional titles, leading a delegation of 10 New Palestine wrestlers advancing to next week's Perry Meridian regional. The Dragons finished second in the Broad Ripple sectional, tallying 197 points. They finished behind champion Warren Central (245.5). The Dragons finished ahead of Franklin Central (174.5), Purdue Poly (165.5) and Greenfield-Central (163.5), as well as four other schools. At 138, Butt advanced to the finals with two falls, before defeating Warren Central's Terry Easley 7-1. He is now 28-2 on the season. At 215, Whetsel had a fall and a tech fall to advance to the finals, where he beat Greenfield-Central's Tristen Lanum 5-4. Whetsel is now 22-2 on the year. The Dragons sent six wrestlers to the finals. Braeden Lintner (132), Bryce Doss (144), Gabe Flick (165) and William Glesing (285) all finished second. Doss suffered his first loss of the season in the championship match. The Dragons had four other wrestlers finish the top four and advance. Blake Doss was third at 113. Wes Harbert (120), Isaiah Jones (175) and Eli Oberle (190) all placed fourth. Three other Dragons placed in the top six. Ryker Yonts was fifth at 157. Kaeden Nelson (106) and Landon Stranger (126) were both sixth.
