Triple-double leads boys basketball to victory

Ben Slagley posted a triple-double Friday, helping lead the New Palestine boys basketball team to a 90-61 victory over Yorktown. Combined with Julius Gizzi's 31 points, they helped lead the Dragons to their eighth straight victory, capping a perfect 7-0 January. Slagley had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in the program's recorded history. Moses Haynes added 15 points. The Dragons jumped ahead quickly, building a 22-12 lead after a quarter, with Gizzi scoring 11 points in the frame, while Slagley and Haynes scored four each. The Dragons extended the lead to 48-27 at the half. Gizzi added eight more points - giving him 19 at the break - while Austin McMahan scored six. The Dragons broke it open in the third, leading 68-41. Gizzi added eight more points, Haynes scored five and Slagley tallied a three-point play. The Dragons largely played their subs in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, but scored 22 points to break the 90-point barrier for the first time this season. In addition to the three double-figure scorers, McMahan and Will Davison scored eight points each, with Davison tying his career high. Evan Darrah added seven points. Keagan Harrison scored four. Eli Parrett, Axtyn Hamblen and Sam Hirschy scored two each. Mason Trammell led Yorktown with 14 points, half of which came in the third quarter. The Dragons improved to 15-2 with the victory, and are now 4-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. They next play Saturday afternoon at Indian Creek.
