Girls basketball returns to win column at Waldron

The New Palestine girls basketball team snapped a three-game skid Thursday with an emphatic 70-39 victory at Waldron. The victory improves the Dragons' record to 9-10 on the season. The 31-point margin was their third-largest victory of the season, and marked the second-highest point total of the year. Isabella Gizzi scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Dragons, while Allie Blum added 15. The Dragons used a strong defensive effort early, building a 13-2 lead after a quarter, then scored 28 points in the second quarter to go up 41-18 at halftime. Gizzi scored seven points in the opening frame to stake the Dragons to an early lead. Blum hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter, while Gizzi scored 10 points in the frame and Kylee Beranek scored seven off the bench. The Dragons extended the lead to 59-27 after three, with Gizzi scoring five points and Blum and Tylar Whitaker four each in the frame. Sadey Hughbanks hit four fourth-quarter free throws as the Dragons tallied 11 points in the final period. Gizzi's 26-point effort was her 14th 20-point game of the season. Blum hit double-figures for the seventh time this season and the second consecutive game. Hughbanks scored nine points, tying her career high. Beranek added seven. Vivian Miller tallied six points, Whitaker four and Gabi Brown three. The Dragons are next in action Saturday against Southport, with a noon JV tipoff followed by a 1:30 p.m. varsity start.
