Glass wins HHC title, Dragons put four in finals

Shaun Glass won the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship at 195 pounds, while New Palestine put four wrestlers in the finals of Saturday's Hoosier Heritage Conference meet. The Dragons finished sixth of eight teams in the event, scoring 135 points. Greenfield-Central won with 226.5, with Delta (208.5) second and Yorktown (158) third. New Castle (157.5) and Mt. Vernon (149.5) were fourth and fifth. The Dragons finished ahead of Shelbyville (105.5) and Pendleton Heights (79). Glass (18-3) won with three falls. He pinned Pendleton Heights' Nate Wells in 38 seconds and Delta's Heath Sprague in 59 seconds to get to the final. In the championship match, he pinned Mt. Vernon's Russell Weaver in 4:32. He was one of four Dragons to advance to the finals. Cole Vandygriff (113), Bryce Doss (120) and Colin Whetsel (182) were all runners-up. Vandygriff (19-4) won by forfeit, then pinned Mt. Vernon's Ty Barnhart in 21 seconds to advance to the final. There, he dropped a 10-8 decision to Lincoln Parsons of Greenfield-Central. Doss (17-2) won by forfeit and had a 9-2 win over Mt. Vernon's Elijah Brody to advance to the final. There, he fell 11-0 to unbeaten Delta wrestler Neal Mosier. At 182, Whetsel (10-6) was unseeded going in, but won a 13-5 decision over Pendleton Heights' Garrett Pederson and a 6-2 match over Shelbyville's Carson Linville to advance to the final. He dropped a 9-4 decision to Greenfield-Central's Silas Frye in the championship match. Two other Dragons finished third. At 126, Tyler Lavin (10-5) went 3-1. He pinned Shelbyville's Jaylen Eads in the opening round, then lost by fall to Yorktown's Cole Stuffel in the semifinal. He wrestled back to third with a 2-0 decision over PH's Max Bowers and a 5-0 decision over G-C's Dylan Luther. At 138, Elijah Alonso (16-10) also finished third, with a 2:00 pin of Yorktown's Scilace Cummins to start the day. He lost an 11-1 decision to New Castle's Gavyn Whitehead in the semifinal, then wrestled back to third with a 3-1 decision over MV's Tristan Trevino and a 9-2 win over Cummins. Also placing for the Dragons - Brandon Brees was fourth at 220, Gunner Butt was fifth at 106 and Gavin Wilcher sixth at 170. The Dragons return to action Tuesday to face Triton Central in their final home match of the season.
