DeLois finishes third in state

New Palestine junior Sydney DeLois finished third in the state at 120 pounds at Friday's Indiana High School Girls Wrestling State Finals at Mooresville High School. DeLois went 3-1 on the day and 8-1 over the two-week state tournament, with all eight wins coming by fall. Seven of the eight pins were in the first period. Her lone loss came to the eventual state champion. DeLois won her first-round match over Tri-County's Ryleeanne Sheldon with a pin in 1:33 to earn a top-eight place. In the quarterfinal, she pinned Mooresville's Madison Whitted in 42 seconds. In the semifinal, she dropped a 6-0 decision to West Lafayette's Rose Kaplan, who went on to win the state title in the next round. DeLois then pinned Hamilton Southeastern's Emily Anderson in 3:29 in the third-place match. She was one of three Dragons to wrestle at the State Finals. At 145, Madisyn Covington lost by fall in 1:55 to Franklin's Jazlinn Diaz-Avalos. At 160, Julia Champ lost by fall in 1:18 to Tri-Central's Samara Clowers-Mires.
