Boys wrestling goes 2-1 at team state

The New Palestine boys wrestling team had a solid day Saturday at the IHSWCA team state duals, going 2-1 to finish ninth. The Dragons opened the day with a close 38-34 loss to New Haven. The Dragons built a 21-12 lead as Gabe Flick, Isaiah Jones and Colin Whetsel all won with first-period falls and Eli Oberle won a 2-1 decision, but a fall, two tech falls, a forfeit and a major decision gave New Haven a 38-21 lead before Braden Lintner won 9-3, Gunner Butt a 14-2 major decision and Bryce Doss won by fall. In their second match, the Dragons beat Greenfield-Central 39-30. The upper weights came up big for the Dragons, as Jones won by fall, Oberle a 9-0 major decision and Whetsel a 3-2 decision, before Glesing pinned is opponent at 285, giving the Dragons a 19-4 lead. The Dragons again clinched the match in the middle weights, as Lintner won by tech fall, Butt a 66-second fall, Ryder Gardner a major decision and Doss a 15-0 tech fall to clinch the match. In the day's final match, the Dragons beat Terre Haute South 42-39. They trailed 39-30 with the two heavyweights to go. Whetsel pinned his opponent in 1:28, and then Glesing clinched the match with a pin in 1:25 to give the Dragons the victory. Also winning by fall were Kaeden Nelson, Wes Harbert, Landon Stranger, Lintner and Doss. The Dragons are now 13-7 on the season in dual meets. They next compete Wednesday at Lawrence North.
