Champ, Wagner-Gilbert win sectional titles

Jillian Champ and June Wagner-Gilbert won individual sectional championships at Friday's Muncie Central girls wrestling sectional. They led the Dragons to a third-place finish in the 15-team sectional with 143 points. The Dragons finished behind Jay County (232) and Hamilton Southeastern (147). Six of the Dragons' eight wrestlers advanced to the regional. At 130, Wagner-Gilbert spent just 61 seconds on the mat. In her semifinal match, she pinned Eastbrook's Olivia Reyes in 32 seconds. In the championship match, she pinned Wes-Del's Kierstyn Ronan in 29 seconds. At 140, Champ also won with three falls. She pinned Blackford's Chloe Smith in 3:38, Muncie Central's Lerah Rollins in 3:39 and Jay County's Emily Manor in 3:19. The Dragons had two second-place finishers. Calie Means was runner-up at 115, winning by two falls before falling by pinn in the championship match. At 135, Lillian Kissel was also second, winning by fall in the semis before dropping a third-period pin in the championship match. At 145, Ella Morris placed third. At 155, Julia Champ finished fourth. The top four finishers in each weight class earned trips to next week's regional at Alexandria. Also placing for the Dragons were Reagan Fortier, who was fifth at 170, and Miranda LaRoche, who placed fifht at 190. The regional will be held at 9 a.m. Jan. 10 at Alexandria.
