DeLois wins regional title, three wrestlers to state

Sydney DeLois won the title at Friday's Indiana High School Girls Wrestling regional at Warren Central, while two other Dragons also clinched berths in next week's State Finals. DeLois won the title at 120 pounds, clinching a top seed at next Friday's State Finals at Mooresville. She won five matches by fall, none of which made it past the first period. She pinned North Central's Paw Paw Say in 21 seconds in her first match, then pinned Southport's Abi Bor in 27 seconds, Purdue Poly's Jasmine Knowles in 58 seconds and Carmel's Zentavia Coatie in 1:16 to win her bracket. In the championship match, she needed just 36 seconds to pin Hamilton Southeastern's Emily Anderson. Two other Dragons also advanced to next week's State Finals with top-four finishes. At 160, Julia Champ finished second. She pinned North Montgomery's Makenna Huston in 3:13 and defeated Carmel's Josie Bellotti 7-0 to get to the title match. There, she lost by fall to Centerville's Shelby Life in 1:23. At 145, Madisyn Covington finished third. She pinned South Vermillion's Lila Westerman in 2:32 and Hamilton Southeastern's Ava Shaw in 5:13 to get to the final match of her bracket, where she lost 7-3 to North Montgomery's Hailey Kunz. In the third-place match, she pinned Noblesville's Ayla Howery in 1:43. Two other Dragons competed at the regional, both in the 132 weight class. Ezra Wagner finished sixth in her bracket, going 1-2 on the day, with her win a 4:44 fall over teammate Julia Champ, who was 0-2 on the day. The State Finals will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13 at Mooresville's Curry Center.
