Girls swimmers place seventh in HHC

The New Palestine girls swimming and diving team finished seventh in Friday's Hoosier Heritage Conference meet at the NPHS natatorium. The Dragons tallied 234 points and finished just 13 points back of fourth-place Mt. Vernon (247). Yorktown (245) and New Castle (242) also finished ahead of the Dragons. Greenfield-Central (474), Delta (282) and Pendleton Heights (277) took the top three spots. Shelbyville was eighth with 102 points. The Dragons' best finish came in the 200 free relay, where Chloe Siler, Kyleigh Turner, Sullie Leavell and Adrianna Huston finished as the conference runners-up with the 10th-best time in school history at 1:46.83. The 200 medley relay of Katelyn Trimpe, Lillie Abernathy, Siler and Rachel Hamilton was fifth, while the 400 free relay of Leavell, Abernathy, Trimpe and Huston finished sixth. Huston had the Dragons' top individual finish, placing third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.62, which is also third-fastest in NPHS history. Trimpe placed 10th in the event. Siler was fourth in the 50 freestyle, leading three Dragons in scoring, as Leavell was seventh and Turner 13th. Siler's time of 25.99 is fifth-fastest in school history. Huston was fifth in the 100 freestyle, with Cadyn Brown 16th. Abernathy had a fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Leavell was seventh and Siler eighth in the 100 butterfly, with Leavell's time of 1:05.47 ranking fifth in NPHS history. In the 500 freestyle, Trimpe finished eighth and Olivia Melangton 12th. Also scoring for the Dragons were Abernathy, who was 13th in the 200 IM. Emma Snyder was 14th and Hamilton 15th in the 100 backstroke. The Dragons will host the boys HHC meet Saturday, with the diving beginning at 9 a.m. and the swimming finals to follow. Both teams will return to action Tuesday with a home dual meet against Beech Grove at 5:30 p.m.
