Basketball teams fall in twinbill

The New Palestine basketball teams both fell in a doubleheader Friday night at Greenfield-Central. The Dragons girls dropped a 48-35 decision in the opening game. The Dragons boys fell 74-57 in the nightcap. In the boys game, the Dragons fell behind early and never were able to rally. They trailed 14-9 after a quarter, with Julius Gizzi scoring six points. A 3-pointer by Moses Haynes cut G-C's lead to 22-18 midway through the second, but the Dragons surrendered 11 points in a four-possession span to fall behind by 15, and trailed 41-22 at the half. The Dragons staged a mini-rally in the third, with Ben Slagley and Haynes scoring six points each in the frame, but trailed 57-42 going into the final frame. Evan Darrah hit two 3-pointers in the final quarter. Gizzi led the Dragons with 19 points. Haynes, Darrah and Slagley scored 12 each, giving the Dragons four players in double figures. Austin McMahan added two points. The Dragons are now 2-1 (0-1 HHC). They next play at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Tipoff Classic at Southport against Zionsville. The Dragons girls had a hot start, leading 15-9 after a quarter, with Kendra Moore hitting four 3-pointers. They built a 24-13 lead in the second after their eighth 3-pointer, but saw the lead cut to 26-21 at the half. The Dragons were then outscored 21-0 in the third quarter and were unable to rally in the fourth. They are now 5-5 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. They next play Tuesday at Mt. Vernon.
