Vandygriff, Doss win titles at Connersville

Cole Vandygriff and Bryce Doss both won individual championships at the 32-team Spartan Classic wrestling tournament at Connersville's Spartan Bowl Friday. The two-day event is one of the state's premier in-season wrestling tournaments. The Dragons finished sixth out of 32 teams with 147.5 points. Greenfield-Central won with 214, with New Castle (172), Fishers (166), East Noble (161) and Columbus North (153) finishing ahead of the Dragons. The Dragons finished ahead of Chatard (139), Jasper (135.5) and multiple other team.s At 113, Vandygriff improved to 17-3, winning all four of his matches, three by fall. He pinned Northeastern's Lucas Chamness in 39 seconds in his first match, then pinned Connersville's Aiden Maze in 1:25 in the quarterfinal. He won a 6-3 decision over Greenfield-Central's Lincoln Parsons in the semifinal and pinned Charleston's Carson Collier in 40 seconds in the championship match. At 120, Doss had a number of convincing victories. He pinned Chatard's Brian Salas in 1:57 in his first match, then won a 10-8 decision over Fishers' Chayce Yant in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, he beat East Noble's Ayman Ahmed by tech fall, 20-3. He won a 9-0 major decision over Franklin County's Colin Troyer in the title match, handing Troyer his first loss of the season. Doss is now 15-1 on the year. The Dragons also had two runners-up. At 106, Gunner Butt advanced to the final with a 7-1 decision over Triton Central's Ayden Nufio and pins over Columbus North's Nolan Riley and Jasper's Caleb Patterson. He lost an 8-5 decision to Northeastern's Heather Crull in the final. Butt is now 14-3 on the season. At 195, Shaun Glass advanced to the final with three pins of Northeastern's Caleb Cohee, Anderson's Clayton Stephens and Chatard's Jeff Waugh - the latter the first loss. He dropped a 4-3 decision to Connersville's Orlan Foster in the title match. Glass is now 15-3. The Dragons had one other wrestler place in the top eight. Diego Reyes lost his first-round match by fall, then won three straight matches to advance, pinning Jasper's Xavier Lopez and Union County's Evan Wolf and winning a 7-6 decision over Shenandoah's Achilles Morrison. He dropped two matches by fall to place eighth. Elijah Alonso (138) and Jaedyn Jeffries (152) both went 2-2 for the Dragons over the two-day tournament. The wrestlers are back in action Jan. 5 with a home dual against Franklin Central.
