Girls basketball rally falls short

The New Palestine girls basketball team struggled early Tuesday at Shelbyville and then stormed back to tie the game late, but the host Golden Bears hit four free throws down the stretch to beat the Dragons 42-38. Trailing 27-10 at halftime after being outscored 17-2 in the second quarter, the Dragons began storming back in the third, led by Gabbie Brown and Kylee Beranek. Brown hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the third quarter, while Beranek scored six points, bringing the Dragons to within 37-28 after three. The Dragons held the Golden Bears without a field goal in the fourth and stormed back to tie the game at 38-38. Sadey Hughbanks and Kendra Moore scored three points each in the frame, while Brown and Beranek each hit shots, but Shelbyville hit four late free throws to seal the game. Brown led the Dragons with 14 of her 17 points coming in the second half. Hughbanks scored nine, Beranek eight and Moore four. The Dragons are now 5-4 (1-2 HHC). They next play at 6 p.m. Friday at Greenfield-Central. The Dragons won the JV game 50-39.
