Kylee Beranek scored a career-high 17 points Wednesday, leading the New Palestine girls basketball team to a 59-36 victory over Greenwood. The Dragons improved to 2-1 on the season with their second straight victory. Beranek led three Dragons in double figures, as Sadey Hughbanks added 13 points and Kenna Tweedy 11. The Dragons found themselves behind 16-9 after a quarter, as Greenwood hit a pair of 3-pointers and got off to a strong start. The Dragons' only field goal was a 3-pointer by Tweedy, but Hughbanks was 4-of-6 from the line in the frame. But just like the previous game - where NP trailed by eight in the opening frame - the Dragons bounced back. They did so in a big way, quickly tying the game on a 3-pointer by Beranek and two free throws and a basket by Hughbanks. The Dragons kept coming, holding Greenwood scoreless in the quarter to take a 24-16 lead. Hughbanks scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, while Beranek nailed two triples in the frame. The Dragons built the lead to double-digits in the third, with Beranek scoring six points and Tweedy five to push the lead to 41-28 after three. An 18-point fourth quarter saw Beranek tally five points, Brooklyn Crim four and Tweedy hit her third 3-pointer of the game. That sealed the victory. In addition to the three double-figure scorers, Crim tallied seven points. Haven Flagle scored six. McKenzie Hacker and Allyson White scored two points each. Tylar Whitaker tallied one point. The Dragons are next in action Tuesday at Franklin Central.
