Covington leads girls wrestlers at Lebanon

Madisyn Covington led the New Palestine girls wrestling team Saturday at the Lebanon Invitational. Covington finished fourth at 145. She won by fall over Northview's Hannnah Slater in 2:40, then pinned Jay County's Haley Ridenour in 1:47 and decisioned Penn's Sophie Atwood 7-4 to get to the final match. She then fell by fall to Gabriella Ocasio of Simon Kenton (Ky.), then dropped the third-place match by fall to Warren Central's Shamiah Long. The Dragons' three other wrestlers all placed fifth. At 126, Sydney DeLois finished fifth, going 4-1 on the day. She won her first-round match by fall, then lost in the quarterfinals by fall. Shen then pinned Taylor's Krysalin Peters in 55 seconds, Pendleton Heights' Claire Bowman in 27 seconds and North Montgomery's Hailee Gemino in 49 seconds. At 132, Jillian Champ finished fifth. She dropped her first match by fall, but then pinned Penn's Mylea McKay in 2:49, Benton Central's Ryker Cooley in 2:34 and Hamilton Heights' Veronica Pruitt in 2:29. At 160, Julia Champ placed fifth. She dropped her quarterfinal match, then won three straight matches by fall, pinning North Montgomery's Makenna Hutson in 2:21, Manchester's Lindsey Dill in 2:41 and Penn's Haylie Badia in 2:57.
