The New Palestine boys tennis team won three marathon matches Thursday to clinch its first sectional title since 2021, beating Mt. Vernon 3-2. The victory gave the Dragons the 19th sectional championship in program history. All five matches were tight, and three went to three sets. The Dragons won two of the three-setters to clinch the victory. Arjomand Khokhar gave the Dragons their first point, with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles. Mt. Vernon won the next two matches, but Moses Haynes and Max Havel rolled in the third set to win 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1 to square the match at two wins apiece. With everyone from both teams watching, Brady Torzewski got ahead by a break and won a tight 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the championship. The Dragons' two losses were also in tight matches. Joey McPike fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Carson Rush/Andrew Hahn dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision at No. 2 doubles. The Dragons are now 16-3 on the season. They compete in the Mt. Vernon regional Oct. 8.
