Boys wrestlers sixth at Capital City Classic

The New Palestine boys wrestling team placed sixth at Saturday's Capital City Classic at Perry Meridian, with four wrestlers finishing in the top three. Shaun Glass finished second at 195 for the Dragons' best place of the day. He pinned Jeffersonville's Leland Ponce and Franklin Central's Julius Parker in the first two rounds before dropping a 10-8 decision to Perry Meridian's Jaylen Young in the championship match. At 113, Cole Vandygriff finished third, winning his first-round match by forfeit. He lost a 13-3 decision to Perry Meridian's RJ Taylor in the second round before wrestling back to third place with a 7-2 win over Jeffersonville's Aiden Stellato and a 16-3 major decision over Indian Creek's Luke Neibert. At 126, Tyler Lavin also finished third. He won a 6-4 decision over Westfield's Chase Camire in the first round, then dropped a 9-4 decision to Franklin Central's Gauge Clark in the semifinals. He wrestled back to third with a pin of Indian Creek's Will Beaver and a 3-2 win over Perry Meridian's Kenny Shotts. At 138, Elijah Alonso also finished third. He lost his quarterfinal match 8-3 to Franklin Central's Moses Stevenson, then wrestled back to finish third, beating Plainfield's Jolt Ellis 10-2, pinning Westfield's Owen Matthews and then decisioning Perry Meridian's Tucker Billerman 3-0. Brandon Brees finished fourth at 182, with two wins by fall over Indian Creek's Curtis Gault and Jeffersonville's Cody Shewmaker. At 152, Jaedyn Jeffries finished fifth, as did John Fairfax at 220. Finishing sixth were Gunner Butt at 106 and Isaac Poetz at 145. The Dragons open the dual meet season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Eastern Hancock.
