THREE-PEAT: Golf sweeps top three spots to win sectional title

The New Palestine girls golf team had a banner day Monday at The Links, as the Dragons shot a season-best 324 to win the New Palestine sectional championship. The Dragons swept the top three individual spots and placed all four scoring golfers in the top eight of a 43-golfer field. The top three teams and top individuals from a non-advancing team advance to Saturday's regional at Edgewood Golf Club in Anderson, where the Dragons will seek to make their second straight State Finals appearance. Junior Katie Kelley was the individual sectional champion, shooting a four-over par 76. She had a consistent round, shooting 38 on each nine. Lauren Deering added a 77, including three birdies on the front nine en route to an even-par 36. Lily Kirchner added an 81 to finish third overall. Janie Hamilton shot 90 and placed eighth overall. Matti Tiede-White's 98 was the Dragons' fifth score. The Dragons won the sectional by 38 strokes over Mt. Vernon (362). Shenandoah (403) was the other advancing team. Rushville (430) finished fourth and Greenfield-Central (432) fifth. The sectional championship was the Dragons' eighth in school history, all coming in an 11-year span.
