Girls wrestlers open season at New Palestine Invitational

The New Palestine girls wrestling team opened its season Saturday at the New Palestine Invitational. Julia Champ led the Dragons, finishing second at 170. She won by forfeit in the quarterfinal round, then pinned Columbus North's Hannah Michael in the semifinal in 14 seconds. She lost by fall to New Albany's Sierra Zamorano in the championship match. At 145, Madisyn Covington finished third. She won by fall over Northview's Hanna Slater in 46 seconds in the quarterfinal, then was pinned by Columbia City's Felice Mullinax in the semifinal. In the third place match, she pinned Southport's Hailey Bowman in 2:12. At 138, Jillian Champ dropped two decisions in her two matches. The Dragons finished 19th out of 30 teams with 39 points. Franklin Central won the event with 127 points. The Dragons are next in action Saturday at the Purdue Polytechnic Invitational.
